Which subtests feed which rating

Only the OAR has a published recipe. For AQR, PFAR and FOFAR, NAMI says the formulas are compensatory and proprietary.

What a stanine tells you

A stanine is a band of percentiles (1 = 1st–4th, 5 = 40th–60th, 9 = 96th–99th); a PFAR in the 6th stanine falls in the 60th–77th percentile. A stanine places you against other test takers, not against how many items you got right, so your share of correct items never maps onto a PFAR of 6.

The pairs matter more than any single number. A pilot applicant needs AQR with PFAR, a flight officer applicant AQR with FOFAR. A strong PFAR does not rescue an AQR below the program's floor.

A minimum is not a target

The program authorization says the minimum applies "only when market conditions or exceptional cases warrant". Immediate selection takes 7 on all three ratings for pilots and 6 for flight officers (same document). Treat the minimum as the floor for a package, not the score to aim for.

The OAR line on your report

The officer rating on this report is the same 20–80 score a short, three-subtest sitting produces. Surface warfare, supply and intelligence set their cut-offs on that number, not on the aviation stanines; those cut-offs are on the officer rating scores page.

Retakes and the score of record

  • Which attempt counts: your latest attempt counts, even if it is lower, whatever version you took. A retake that goes worse replaces the better score.
  • How often: at most 3 attempts at the current version (OAR and ASTB-E attempts count together), at least 30 full calendar days apart, and the whole battery is retaken each time.
  • Old forms: NAMI publishes no expiry; old scores from forms 1–5 stay valid until you take the ASTB-E.

With only three attempts in a lifetime, a retake is worth it only when the weak part has had real study, not a week of review. The study guide shows which parts move with study.

More on the ASTB-E

ASTB-E scores, answered

What ratings does a Navy pilot applicant need?

The minimum is AQR 4 and PFAR 5 (designator 1390; Program Authorization 106, November 2023). Immediate selection asks for 7s. Program minimums change, so confirm with your recruiter.

Can I calculate my aviation ratings in advance?

No. NAMI does not release the AQR, PFAR or FOFAR formulas, and the officer rating is scaled, not counted. Any calculator online is guessing at weights.

When do the ratings appear?

On screen, right after you finish all six subtests.

Does the Marine Corps use the same minimums?

No. Marine Corps aviation: set by the Marine Corps (MCO 1542.1I); ask your officer selection officer.
