An ASTB-E study plan, subtest by subtest

Updated Nov 6, 2026facts checked Nov 6, 2026

The ASTB-E rewards study unevenly. Aviation and nautical knowledge moves the most, the math and mechanics you already half know come next, PBM responds to practice of a different kind, and NATFI cannot be studied for at all.

ASTB-E practice test ASTB-E guide

The battery you are preparing for

  1. MST Math Skills Test adaptive
  2. RCT Reading Comprehension Test adaptive
  3. MCT Mechanical Comprehension Test adaptive
  4. ANIT Aviation and Nautical Information Test adaptive
  5. NATFI Naval Aviation Trait Facet Inventory
  6. PBM Performance Based Measures Battery

2 hours to 3 hours 15 minutes for the full battery

Every part except PBM is adaptive, and the formulas behind the aviation ratings are compensatory, so a weak spot costs less than on a pass/fail test, but it still costs.

Order of work on the ASTB-E

  1. ANIT first. NAMI describes it as knowledge rather than aptitude, the subtest study improves most. Start with the ANIT page, then the FAA's Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge for the aviation half and a seamanship text for the nautical half.
  2. Math without a calculator. The test gives formulas, not arithmetic speed. Practice fractions, percents, roots and unit conversions with pencil and paper; the Math Skills page has items for it.
  3. Mechanics with three choices. Gears, pulleys, levers, fluids and circuits on Mechanical Comprehension; learn when "no difference" is the right pick.
  4. Reading for what the passage supports. Short daily sets in the RCT section of the practice test.
  5. PBM practice. Mental rotation drills and a stick-and-throttle flight simulator, the two methods NAMI names. Details on exam facts.
  6. NATFI: nothing to study. Answer the statement pairs as you are; there is no keyed answer to learn.

Spending the days before an attempt

Take a mixed set from the practice test first and rank the four knowledge subtests by misses. Give the most days to the worst one, keep the others warm with short sets, and finish with a mixed set taken straight through without going back, because the real test will not let you.

Plan around the attempt limit, not a calendar: at most 3 attempts at the current version (OAR and ASTB-E attempts count together), at least 30 full calendar days apart, and the whole battery is retaken each time. A rushed first sitting spends one of three.

Books written for forms 3–5

Older ASTB books and flashcard decks still teach the Spatial Apperception Test and fixed item counts per subtest, both from the retired forms. Before buying, check that a book describes adaptive subtests, PBM and NATFI. Our check of the current battery is dated November 2026.

  • NAMI's sample questions (PDF, 2014): the format of each knowledge subtest straight from the test owner. Its seventh, biographical part is no longer on current lists.
  • Our pages: the practice test, the subtest pages linked above, and ASTB-E scores for the targets.
  • Pilot path overall: how the Navy route compares with the Air Force and Army ones is on how to become a military pilot.

Preparing for the ASTB-E

Which ASTB-E subtest improves most with study?

ANIT. NAMI says it measures knowledge rather than aptitude and points to aviation and seamanship books.

Can you prepare for PBM at home?

Partly. NAMI suggests mental rotation exercises and a flight simulator with a stick and throttle. You will not see the test's own tasks before test day.

Is an ASTB prep book worth buying?

Only one written for the ASTB-E. A book that still lists a Spatial Apperception Test or item counts per subtest describes the retired forms.
